Character Information
Character Name: Utsuki
Canon: Kuon
Canon Point: After being revived at the end of the game.
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive.
History:
As a young girl, Utsuki lived with her older sister, Kureha, and her father, Doman, near an isolated silkworm shrine next to a sprawling mansion owned by the wealthy Fujiwara family. Doman, an enormously powerful civilian onmyouji, imparted some of his skills to his daughters. While he might have held some small amount of affection toward his daughters, however, the main drive between many of his actions was a desire to get back at another onmyouji: a woman named Abe no Seimei, who had humiliated Doman professionally. Utsuki and Kureha knew none of this, spending their childhoods looking after silkworms, playing board games, tending the garden and shrine, and so on.
Through his research, Doman came upon a closely-held secret about the nature of the shrine and the two mulberry trees planted nearby, one near the Ashiya home and one in the Fujiwara’s garden. These trees were not only sentient, but capable of manifesting their personalities in the form of ghostly twin children. Moreover, by using the silkworms living on the trees in a form of dark magic, it was possible to “rebirth” a dead corpse as a new kind of life form – a child of the mulberry trees. Doman weakened the seal suppressing the mulberry trees’ power. This allowed the twins to manifest themselves in the real world, allowing them to cause Kureha’s accidental death by startling Utsuki as she held up the rope ladder Kureha was using to climb up from a sheer cliff.
Kureha was killed instantly, then revived using the Kuon spell the twins provided. Unfortunately, the completion of the spell required that a dead person merge nine times with another corpse, each time spinning a magical cocoon around itself before emerging once more. Of course, this meant Kureha needed a fresh supply of corpses to fuel her transformations – meaning that Kureha needed to kill many times in order to sustain herself. As it happened, one of Kureha’s victims was Utsuki, the end result being that the bodies of the two sisters were combined into a fearsome monster who was completely confused about who and what she was. In the end, Abe no Seimei herself came to resolve the incident, defeated Doman, and allowed Kureha/Utsuki to complete the spell by merging with the corpse of their dead father. As a result, a new version of Utsuki was born: a girl born of the mulberry trees, carrying around a small mulberry tree of her own.
Personality: Utsuki is a shy, gentle young woman who enjoys gardening. She’s naturally deferential to others, having been raised to respect her father and figures of authority at all times, and she does have some amount of guilt left over from the events before her rebirth. After all, while the twins caused Kureha’s death, it was Utsuki’s hands that ultimately allowed Kureha to slip from her hold on the rope ladder – and as Kureha/Utsuki, she was responsible for the deaths of multiple people, even though it was Kureha’s consciousness that actually did them in.
While Utsuki is meek and easily frightened, she also has an enduring sense of loyalty and a strong will. She braved a haunted mansion, demons, resurrected corpses, and a terrifying underworld in an attempt to find her sister; moreover, after she realized what she’d become, she tried to resist the pull of the Kuon curse for as long as she could, even setting fire to the corpses around her to try and resist the urge to merge with them and complete the Kuon spell.
Now that Utsuki is no longer under the influence of the evil mulberry trees, or her father, she’s free to grow and see the world. However, she’s led a sheltered life for the most part, despite the horrific events of the last few days of her life. Utsuki still dearly loves her older sister. While she feels betrayed by her father, the fact that one of his disciples, Sakuya, was so instrumental in saving her life allows Utsuki to feel as though she can still rely on people outside her family. Right now her goals are to live – to adjust to her new existence as a supernatural being, to become accustomed to dealing with strange people and strange lands, and to experience as much as she can before she’s forced to settle down.
Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
Utsuki is not as accomplished a spiritualist as her father, but she does have a few tricks up her sleeve. She can heal her own injuries through the practice of intense meditation (more injuries require more time, naturally, and she can't be interrupted while she's doing this). She is also unusually sensitive to malice and murderous intent, which can physically harm her if intense enough/unexpected. She also has some skill in removing mystical seals, particularly ones that hold close doors or passageways.
Utsuki can hold her own reasonably well with a dagger. She can also temporarily summon creatures or perform simple spells (such as fire or ice spells) with the use of spell cards.
Weaknesses:
Because of the circumstances of her death and subsequent rival, Utsuki exists as both a human-ish body and a small potted mulberry tree. Hurting her human body is about as easy as harming a zombie girl of equivalent size and strength (i.e. pretty easy). However, her actual consciousness is tied to the tree; burning it will injure or kill her, and she can be forced into dormancy or sluggishness if exorcismal artifacts or rituals are applied to it.
Utsuki is physically unable to travel long distances (around the size of a small town), as she must remain under the spiritual influence of her tree at all times. Once it grows past her ability to transport it in potted form, she will be effectively tethered to its location.
